Professional Anodized Aluminum Cleaning Guide

To maintain the integrity of anodized aluminum, follow these guidelines, which are based on recommendations from the Aluminum Anodizing Council (www.anodizing.org).

General Cleaning Rules:

  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Never use cleaners with high concentrations of acids or caustics. Anodizing is an amphoteric coating, which means it will be damaged by solutions that are either highly acidic or highly alkaline. This includes common household cleaners and dishwashing detergents not specifically designed for aluminum.

  • Handle with Care: Refrain from using harsh abrasives like sandpaper or steel wool. Instead, use gentle cleaning tools such as fine-grade Scotch-Brite pads or pumice powder.

  • Be Mindful of Solvents: Do not use chlorinated solvents, as they can stain the finish.

  • Test First: Always test your cleaning method on a small, inconspicuous area before applying it to the entire surface. This prevents widespread damage to the finish.

Recommended Cleaning Method:

For routine cleaning, a mild soap is preferable to a strong detergent. A recommended technique is to use an abrasive cleaning sponge with a mild dishwashing liquid. This approach effectively cleans the surface without harming the anodized finish.
