The tradition of using canine names at Charter Arms goes back to the company's early roots, originating in 1973 with the release of the legendary .44 Bulldog. Inspired by the historical 19th-century British Bull Dog revolvers by Webley & Scott, the moniker fit the firearm's physical nature perfectly—it was compact, stocky, rugged, and packed a surprisingly heavy bite for its small size. The .44 Bulldog quickly became a massive commercial hit, establishing Charter Arms as the go-to maker for high-caliber, snub-nosed personal protection revolvers.

 

Building on the wild success of its flagship model, Charter Arms leaned heavily into canine nomenclature to expand its product line with distinct "pack" families. The company introduced the Pitbull, engineered specifically for rimless auto-loader cartridges like 9mm and .45 ACP, alongside the stout .357 Mag Pug, the ultra-compact Boomer, and the multi-caliber Double Dog series.
